      Life Under Ground - Jabez Auty was summoned by Robert Brown for assaulting him. The complainant and the defendant are both miners in the employ of Mr Charlesworth, in Stanley parish, and on the 8th instant some difference was between them while at the pit bottom, when the defendant, who was the strongest and most athletic looking man of the two, hit him with his fist and gave him a black eye – Mr Marshall severely reprimanded defendant for his cowardly conduct in assaulting a man much inferior to himself in strength; and recommended him, if he had any complaints to make in future to make them to the under steward, whose duty it was to see matters rectified. He was ordered to pay 17s or be sent to the House of Correction for 14 days.

      Magistrates Present:- The Mayor (Joseph Holdsworth Esq.), Thos Hague Esq. And Mr G.W. Harrison for borough cases.

      Trespass - Mr John Wright, beer house-keeper, Stanley cum Wrenthorpe, charged Jabez Auty, of same place, labourer, with breaking two squares of glass in his windows. Mr Wright stated that on the 22nd ult. He saw Auty coming to his house drunk, when he shut the door, and refused to let him in; defendant then broke the windows.---
      Ordered to pay 16s, or 14 days imprisonment.

      Police News

      Assaulting Females - Jabez Auty, Jesse Ramsden and Arron Farrer were summoned for assaulting Mrs Ramsden, Elizabeth Lindley and Mrs Speigh at Potovens on 27th ult. Mr Barrell appeared for the defence. The case was clearly proved, and the defendants were ordered to pay £2, including expenses.
      Jesse Ramsden was also charged with throwing stones and breaking open the door of Alice Parttey at Potovens on the same night. He was ordered to 18s, including expenses.
